Kindle EPUB: Generic EPUB Error

If you upload your EPUB and see this message, you might need to enable Kindle EPUB:

BookFunnel detected issues in your Generic EPUB that may cause problems in your book when using Send to Kindle, like whole chapters in bold/italics or missing elements. We recommend you enable the Kindle EPUB setting for this book.

BookFunnel checks EPUBs for compatibility with Send to Kindle.

This error means that BookFunnel scanned your Generic EPUB and found issues that will likely cause one or more of these problems when opened in the iOS Kindle app:

  1. There may be sections of text in bold or italics (that weren’t intentional)
  2. Some elements in the book’s front matter or back matter may be hidden, like your copyright, dedication, or “about the author” page

These problems will likely only appear in the iOS Kindle app (which is the most popular reading app in the US). Testing your Generic EPUB on any other Kindle or Kindle app won’t show you the styling issues BookFunnel detected. Learn why some books look ugly on iOS Kindle.

How to Address Issues

  1. If your Generic EPUB looks good and you think our precheck might be wrong, test your EPUB! Email it to your Kindle library and open it in the iOS Kindle app. Testing on any other Kindle or Kindle app won’t show these issues.

    If your EPUB is looks good in the iOS Kindle app and doesn’t have any missing elements or accidental italics, you can disable Kindle EPUB.
  2. If you test your EPUB and it looks bad in the iOS Kindle app, please enable Kindle EPUB.

What does enabling Kindle EPUB do?

When you enable Kindle EPUB, BookFunnel makes very small, surgical changes to address the issues detected in the file. None of your styling is removed. The file is slightly tweaked to suit Send to Kindle’s conversion process.

The new file is labeled a “Kindle EPUB” on your dashboard and distributed to Kindle readers.

How to Enable Kindle EPUB

To enable a Kindle EPUB on your book:

  1. Click Books on your BookFunnel dashboard
  2. Click the book title
  3. Click Action next to the Kindle EPUB file format
  4. Select Enable Kindle EPUB
